The weekend in Calgary started out pretty calm. We drove down on Saturday afternoon and the girls had a practice time at the lanes later that evening.
We then just hung out at the pool. Cortney and Nicolette both hurt themselves (not bad thank goodness) just doing stupid stuff at the pool.
The next morning we all met at the restaraunt and had a good breakfast and then walked over to the lanes. Everyone was pretty nervous...which really showed in their practice balls before the first game. Bailey, our most experienced bowler, threw THREE gutter balls out of her five practice throws. Uh oh...maybe we are in trouble.
It was then time to start. And wow...what a start we had. BAILEY THREW SIX STRIKES IN A ROW. Then followed that up by a 5/5/5 frame, then a spare and then another strike. She bowled a 317 game - that is 200 points OVER her average. I am not sure who was more excited, Bailey, her coach, us, or the coach of the other team. None of us could believe it. AMAZING.
Bailey continued on really well for the rest of the tournament with only one game that was right at her average.
And not to take anything away from the other girls, they both bowled really well all day too. Jillian stayed right at her average all day and Cortney had a couple really good games which put her at 70 - 100 pts over her average as well.
The girls bowled 4 games with a combined score at the end. This tournament was a POA (pins over average). How this is scored is each team has a combined average for their players which is determined by their league play. In this tournament, any score over and above their average is added together to get a total Pins Over Average score. The highest POA score wins.
We knew after the first two games that we were 200+ POA above the nearest team. Then the score sheets were taken away. So we were on the edge of our seats for the rest of the day. Coach Kevin had been keeping a running total and said to us very quietly that he thought we had won. His total was that the girls were 711 POA which he said was absolutely phenominal.
After all was finished at the lanes we headed downtown to the awards ceremony.
We are all pretty excited. I thought us parents were going to pass out from hyperventilating while they were doing the awards. The awards ceremony was massive. The kids there played both 5 and 10 pin...and they had team events and singles in 3 different age groups. The Combo team event was a new one and they awarded these at the end of everything...so it was a long wait.
Kevin kept fidgeting in his seat so I knew it must be good news. Then it happened - THEY CALLED OUR GIRLS AS THE WINNERS!!! They looked stunned. But were troopers and made sure they showed their good sportsmanship by shaking the other teams hands on their way up. They were given flowers, banners and medals on the podium and then afterwards they were given the customary Black Stetsons.
We are now in the midst of getting our plane tickets and hotels booked for Nationals which happen May 1 - 5 in Toronto. All of Bailey's stuff is paid for except hotel as she will be staying with us. We already can't get on the flight that she is on (she travels with the other members of the Alberta team and her coach) as it is full.
WOW - PROUD PARENTS OR WHAT???
