How sick can a person get?

I don't think I have seen Doyle this sick in YEARS.

He has headache, backache, the chills and then a fever so high, he is soaking clothes fast.

I finally talked him into going to the dr. yesterday and he was there for THREE hours. Nothing fast about our medical system here.

The doctor put him on some broad spectrum antibiotics and then sent him to the lab for some bloodwork.

He has been sleeping lots but not very soundly. I hope he gets better soon.

One more interview out of the way

This one was with the RCMP. It is for an Investigative Clerk position with the Major Crimes Department.

It wasn't so much an interview as a testing session. I had to do some proof reading and some dictation.

After it was all done, I was told that if my scores were acceptable, then I would be called in for an actual interview.

The next step after the interview, is for background checks and security checks. If all works out then they would be hiring.

I hope it all works out. I think it would be a very interesting place to work.

Weather

I sure wish Mother Nature would decide whether it is going to be winter or spring already. We have bounced from +11 on Monday the 19th down to -30 today (the 26th). And they are predicting +4 by Thursday. Good lord…I am surprised I don’t have horses with no winter hair.

Kids and bowling

We arrived home to some exciting bowling news for Shayne and Bailey.

The kids are both in the Zone Tournaments for the 4 Steps to Stardom. In this tournament, they bowl “pins over average”. During the year, the kids develop an average score for all their games.

During this tournament the team that has the best score “over their posted average”, wins. According to their coach, both teams have a good chance of going to Provincials.

Please keep them in your thoughts on Feb 8 as they compete for a spot at Provincials.

Personal Best Program has started

I have started working with a nutritionist and a personal trainer. I have not lost any weight yet but my belt is doing up two holes smaller. I just got my first workouts from Brenda this week (did two days with her)...now it is time to work on my own for a couple weeks.

The eating part seems to be easy. She has me on a 1400 cal diet...split between 6 meals a day. And then she broke that down in to "what" to eat. So not just "so many calories" per meal...but so much carbs, protien and fat per meal. And then gave me a cheat sheet as to what is acceptable for carbs etc. So it is easy easy!!!

The exercising is: one day cardio - so I do 30 minutes on the treadmill (with two specific speeds and how long to go with each one)...and the next day is strength (using an exercise ball and weights). So I do those 3 x per week each and take Sundays off.

so far so good. LOL

She figures that if I can follow exactly what she has down on paper, and do all the exercising...I will be down to - get this - ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY pounds by my birthday!!!!!!!

I am falling behind

More photography course info arrives

I got home to my “free stuff” sitting here from the New York Institute of Technology. It consisted of a flash drive, a really nice bag, a grey cloth, 3 light reflectors and a monopod.

Then two days later, I received Units 2 and 3 for my course. EEPS.

Guess I best get busy on Unit 1. I started listening to the cd’s that came with it…only to realize that you are to listen to them as you read through the lesson books. No wonder I wasn’t totally understanding the books.

Finally!!!

I finally sold a horse.

Molson is headed to a new home at the end of the month.

I got an e-mail mid week from a lady asking if she could come and look at both Molson and Gidget. She had also called and talked to Melissa. While I had told her that I was away and she would have to wait, Melissa had told her that she could come look. So arrangements were made for her to come on Saturday...which as we all know was not a good day here.

Anyways...she came out last night and looked him over really good. And FELL IN LOVE. So he is off to be a breeding stallion and hopefully, a reining horse.

She also took a look at Gidget (as well as she could in the dark) and thinks she is a sweetie and will look her over closer tonight when she drops off the money for Molson.

She also tried to talk me out of Ding and Rondee...but I said "not for sale - at least at this time". She said "well, I will have to be more persuasive then". LOL

Lucky was laid to rest - Jan 19

She was buried with her two favorite blankets (ones I have had almost as long as her - don't know if horses have favorites)...and ones that I used always for her.

She was also buried with the ashes of our first great pyr dog, Tika. She died 3 years ago and Doyle cremated her and kept some of her ashes.

She is facing west and looks like she is running flat out which was her favorite speed.

I had my good cry...actually 3 or 4 of them and I am sure there are more tears to come.

Melissa stayed home from work today to be here for all this and we cried together. And the Doyle and I did...and then Melissa and Doyle did.

She looked very peaceful.

My "Lucky" story

In 2003, Chicken Soup for the Soul books was going to do a "Horse Lover's" edition and invited the public to submit their stories.

I submitted this to them:

MY HORSE OF A LIFETIME

In almost every little girl’s dreams is the love of a pony. At least my birthday wishes and Christmas dreams were for a horse to call my own. It seemed as though my every waking moment was filled with something horsey – a book, a toy. Every holiday was spent counting how many horses I saw as we traveled down the highway, trying to talk my parents into stopping at every stable that had horses for hire. My whole life seemed to revolve around horses.

In 1980, my wishes and dreams came true. My parents came home from work in April of 1980 and announced to the family that we were moving - once again - but this time it was to an acreage just south of Calgary, Alberta. The next thing out of their mouths shocked me: "Carrie, if you want a horse, start saving!!” I couldn’t believe it, my dreams, wishes and prayers had been answered!

In just under 4 months, I had saved up $500 by babysitting and delivering newspapers. I started looking for my dream horse which had always been to own a black mare. When I finally found her, she wasn't exactly what I had dreamed of – she was a green broke buckskin mare - but to me she was perfect. My parents’ friends, who were accomplished horse people, came with us to look at her and said that we were an excellent match.

We were given a little background information on her - she had been born on a big quarter horse ranch somewhere just south of Calgary. The people I bought her from came across her and her filly in a barn being abused because they were extremely wild, never having been handled before. To save the two horses, they bought them right then and there.

This history shaped our relationship greatly as it took a long time for her to trust anyone. It also gave me some inspiration for her name. My mom asked me what I was going to call her stating that I was lucky to have found her. I think she was pretty lucky to have been rescued I answered. And it hit me “LUCKY” she was and always would be.

When we brought her and her filly home, my parents took my saddle away from me and I had to stay at home in the pasture until I could handle her properly. Catching Lucky was also quite the experience. She would let me get within three feet of her and then she would trot off. She would then let me walk up to her again only to trot off. Mom used to laugh and say that she was playing “tag” with me and the game has never ended. She also surprised us the following summer with a colt – we never knew she was in foal when we bought her.

Our next four years were spent happily exploring around the countryside - going into town to 7-11 for slurpees, visiting my friends, racing other people who were riding horses but she also loved to race motorcycles too.

Lucky was a very spirited horse but she did manage to surprise us with her sense of her rider’s ability. My nephew, who at the time was 4, could get on her without a saddle or bridle and ride anywhere and she would plod along. My neighbour’s daughter used her for riding lessons and she behaved beautifully. But for anyone with a lot of experience, she was a handful.

Lucky and I rode in the Little Britches Parade in High River. She was always so showy – prancing her way through the parades – especially the one year where we had the Shriner’s Band and little cars in front of us and the Al Shamal pipe band (where they wear the funny shoes) band behind us. That was an interesting ride but very fun.

In 1984, we moved to Moose Jaw, SK and hauled her with us in the back of a half ton with stock racks as she refused to go into a trailer. As I was only allowed to take one horse with me, we sold Lucky’s two babies to great people who owned them for their entire lives.

In Moose Jaw, Lucky was boarded on a farm, but I still managed to ride as often as I could. We traveled through out Moose Jaw in our quest for something interesting to do. Saskatchewan was also the first place that Lucky and I had ever encountered hills to trek over and a river to wade through.

In 1988, I became a mom myself so my riding time dwindled. With a move to Edmonton the same year, Lucky was on the move again. Finding time to ride was hard during that time of my life. I can still remember Melissa’s first ride on Lucky - she was 6 weeks old and in a baby carrier and Lucky was an angel – she must have known that Melissa was up there with me.

In 1992, I married Doyle and soon began his transformation from a city slicker to farm boy. After years of boarding Lucky out, Doyle and I decided to purchase a farm of our own. Lucky was, finally, back where she belonged, in my backyard. I semi-retired Lucky to pasture at age 16, as I was busy having my family but we still enjoyed going for the occasional ride.

At the age of 20, I decided to breed Lucky again. She foaled a nice buckskin colt. I finally got the color I was breeding for but the wrong sex, so I decided to try again and bred her to my girlfriend’s paint stallion. She foaled out a beautiful red roan paint filly. Not quite the right color but wow – what a looker!!

Since then, we have found our dream home and Lucky has again made the transition to a new home. After all the years of relocating in my life – this is it!!

My daughter Melissa now rides Lucky. It absolutely amazes me to watch them. No one else has ever been able to handle her as well as I learned to. But Melissa is definitely my child. My mom says it is amazing to watch Lucky and Melissa. She told me one day that "it is déjà vu - like going back in time to watch you and that horse except now the rider is blond not brunette". After giving Melissa Lucky’s last filly, I feel that life has come full circle and I hope that Melissa and Angel will enjoy the same life long love that Lucky and I have had. Even the ages are the same - Lucky was 4 and I was 12 when we began our journey. Angel was 4 and Melissa was 13 at the time.

And now the next generation has arrived. Angel has made Lucky a grandma. Lucky is now 27 and still going strong.

I love my dear old horse and will always consider her "MY HORSE OF A LIFETIME". Others horses may come and go from my life but none of them will ever mean so much to the "horse crazy little girl" that I was and still am.

Home at last

After a couple hours sleep, it was up and back to the real world. I had my days mixed up and thought that the farrier was coming...but I was wrong.

I had to phone around and find a guy to come and dig a grave for Lucky. That was my main concern for the day.

We found a guy in Mundare who would come out in the afternoon for us. He had been here before for the same reason.

It was a long hard day but I made it through it all.

I got some great e-mails and phone calls from friends. We all laughed and cried together over our memories of Lucky.

A long travel day - Jan 18

This would prove to be one of the longest days in my life that I can remember.

I didn't sleep well at all after the devasation of the night before. I did make a bunch of phone calls about her to friends and family. And remembering some of the good times did help.

It was an absolutely beautiful day outside. We went for a quick breakfast after finishing packing and calling the bellboys to get our luggage. We packed a small carry-on with our jeans etc. to change into before heading to the airport.

We went to the pool after eating and while the kids swam, Doyle and I soaked up the sun.

At noon, we headed back to the lobby to change and took the kids over to the crocodile pens that we had found on Thursday. They have the big momma croc by herself...and a bunch of different size babies in glass sided pens for people to see.

We also saw a few really colorful birds on the way to the lobby. It was weird. We had been there for 14 days and had never seen these.

Our plane rides were uneventful. Shayne and I worked on his english essay and got a really good start on it. And Bailey and I finished her math.

We arrived home around 2 am on Monday the 19th. The weather was really nice for this time of year...with a temperature of -4C.

Melissa was waiting up for us...and we both had a good cry. Her first words to me were "don't hate me". I reassured her that she did the absolute best job in the world and I couldn't have been more proud of her.

How my world fell apart - Jan 17

When we got back to the resort on Saturday night, I went to the internet cafe to check on messages etc.

Melissa and I had been in close contact because of Lucky (my old horse).

I knew something was wrong when I got her two messages that day. I e-mailed Paige and got no response. So I switched over to facebook. Paige was online and when asked if she got my e-mail she said "Yes...I am so sorry".

I about lost it right then and there. I just said "gotta go". And held myself together long enough to get into our room. Once inside, however, there was no holds barred. I lost it. Doyle thought maybe something had happened to parents, kids...until he got close enough to hear me say "Lucky's gone".

I was sooo distraught that I didn't even want him to touch me. I shook for over an hour.

I finally got ahold of my parents and they told me what had happened.

Melissa had gone out to feed in the morning and Lucky was laying down. That, in itself, is not normal. She was also laying down in the barn...totally not normal. She ran back into the house and called me...but of course, I couldn't be reached. She then called my parents in BC. They told her to keep and eye on her. She went to check and Lucky was flat out on her side. And foaming at the mouth.

She ran in, bawling herself, and called my parents. They told her to call the vet. In the midst of all this, Melissa was also chatting with one of my internet friends, Desiree. Desiree told her to do the same things as my parents did.

So the vet was called. And it was determined that Lucky had gone toxic. All her organs had started to shut down and she was dying. And nothing could be done to slow it down and to stop her suffering long enough for me to get home to be there for her. So they made the right decision and put her down.

The vet was great. Helped her cover Lucky up and get the barn as safe as it could be from preditors.

While this devastated me...and will for a while...I had an idea it was coming, and had told my parents that at Christmas. I wish, and you know what they say about hindsight, that I had put Lucky down in the fall. I knew she wasn't long for this earth but she kept rallying and tricking me.

I will NEVER EVER forget this stubborn old horse. We lived together for many more years than most do.

RIP Lucky!!!

Playa Del Carmen - Cozumel - Jan 17

It has arrived. Our last full day in Mexico. And it is almost nice out. Still warm by Canadian standards, but still chilly and a bit damp for here.

We decided to go to Playa Del Carmen and then over on the ferry to Cozumel again today. We still have a little bit of shopping to do for friends and family, so this is our last chance to do it.

We arrived in Playa and I headed directly to Diamonds International and bought my pendant. I had finally decided that it was exactly what I wanted...and told Doyle so. LOL A girl sometimes has to do what a girl has to do...right ladies???

After that, we wandered around and bought some more souvineers for people. And got our ferry tickets. We had just over an hour until the next one left so decided to go grab some lunch at Senor Frogs.

The ferry ride was HORRIBLE again. It was very wavy...just typing about it my stomach is going up and down. NOT GOOD.

The weather was great though. We walked all over the place and bought a few more things. I spotted this cute little chihauhau dog just outside one little market. Isn't he adorable???

Cozumel, the parts we saw, were very cute. Reminded Doyle and I of all the little islands we saw on our cruise...the colors and the parks in the middle of the town square.

We headed back to Playa just before dark. We walked around a little more trying to find a new place to eat. And came across a wedding procession coming right down the middle of the shopping street (5th Avenue). The bride and groom looked very happy - and she was comfortable in her blinged out FLIP FLOPS. LOL

We found a cute little restaurant called "Charlie's" and had a great little meal.

I took some night shots of one of the little shopping streets that goes down to the pier. Once of the ferries was sitting there...and you can just make out the lights of Cozumel on the horizon. I wish it had turned out better!!!

It was then time to head back to the resort via taxi. The taxi driver this time was talkative and we found out that there are almost 700,000 people living in Cancun, 127,000 living in Playa Del Carmen. He also told us that people can live quite well on a monthly income of $1500 US. Houses (normal sized ones) sell for around $55,000 or so. Very interesting information.

Yucky weather - Jan 15 and 16

We still haven't gotten out of the rainy weather this week. We spent most of Thursday and Friday in the room. The kids were doing homework and Doyle and I were relaxing.

I worked on some photography stuff. I must be missing something as I am not able to do some stuff that I think I should be with my camera. I did get some audio cd's with my course, but don't have a cd player with me. Maybe that is where my extra info is on how to do things.

On Thursday, Doyle and I booked a tour just for the two of us to go and see a jewelry factory. The stuff they have at the resort is absolutely STUNNING so I would imagine that this place will be pheonominal!!!

We arrived at the factory via taxi and were taken in and introduced to our tour guide. We were told where things were located in the store...as well as how the pricing would work. Sounded interesting. The guide then said we were free to go and shop. So off we went - after asking him where the diamonds were located - as I was still looking for a pendant.

He took us over to a "private room" where the diamond jewelry was. They had black, green, blue, yellow and white diamonds. BEAUTIFUL STUFF!!! But way way way out of our price range, even for the small stuff.

This tour guide guy just wouldn't leave us alone after that. Everytime I would stop and look at something, he was grabbing it out of the case. It got annoying.

We finally found a few little trinkets in silver to get for Autumn and Coreen as well as a couple things for Mark and Luke. We then decided to get Rose and my mom each a gold and silver pendant with their names engraved on them in mayan letters.

After everything was paid for, we went out to find our taxi only to find that THEY HAD LEFT US BEHIND. Wasn't that nice of them? We were then grouped with another two couples who had the same thing happen to them. WOW...not great service.

After we got back to the resort, we went and ate dinner.

Friday was the same type of a day - lazy, rainy, windy. I spent some time on the internet...and more time helping Shayne work on his english. He sure struggles with that subject.

By mid-afternoon, it had cleared up enough that the kids wanted to go to the pool...so off we went. They played in the water and Doyle and I went for a walk down to the beach.

It was very windy and the water was pretty rough. I took a picture of the pier and the water from the beach:

I got these great wave/water shots from the pier:

And these are a couple pics of the resort from the end of the pier:

For supper tonight, we went to the Tremonto Restaurant at the resort. This is a fairly fancy place, dress code in effect and all. We had a great waiter named "Angel". He tried to charm Bailey but it didn't work. It was lobster night. Doyle, Shayne and Bailey each ordered that and I just had steak (I think I was done with the seafood by then). The restaurant also has an opera singer who goes around the place singing in different places...and it has a violin player. Bailey was very enthusiastic about that after seeing his "electric" violin. Both were very talented.

We headed back to the room fairly early that night and just relaxed by watching a movie while it rained some more outside.

Moon Palace - Jan 14

On Wednesday, we had our "free" day at the Moon Palace resort. It was one of the perks for going through their timeshare presentation the week before.

Our "free" day consisted of being allowed at the resort from 8 am until 11 pm. It included all the non-motorized water sports, all the buffets, free drinks all day, and to be allowed to go to the nightshow (it was kareoke that night).

On top of all that, Doyle and I had been given a free facial and 25 minute massage.

We got to the resort around 11 am as the weather was not looking too promising again. We went to one of the 14 restaurants for buffet. We were too late for breakfast but what can you do. The food was plentiful but not overly great (as far as I was concerned).

We then set the kids up at the pool - which was FREEZING - and went off for our massage and facial appointments.

Those were great. Really relaxing. Doyle enjoyed his massage more than his facial. He said for a couple days after that he could still feel the "goop". LOL

On our way back from the spa, I took some pics of the golf course and of the little "raccoon" animal that I didn't see the previous week at the zoo.

We went and found the kids when we were done and they said "Can we go...we are freezing". Before we left, we went in and had lunch. May as well take advantage of as much free stuff as we can.

We went back to the resort and just ordered in room service as the weather had turned nasty again.

Rainy day - Jan 13

Well, we woke up on Tuesday morning to pouring rain. Just as it was forecast to be.

Doyle and I went and did laundry and the kids worked on their homework.

It calmed down at bit by later afternoon so we went down to the pool for an hour or so. It wasn't nice enough out to take out the camera so no pics on this day either.

Room day - Jan 12

We had another excursion booked for Monday the 12th. But Bailey was not feeling good so us girls stayed behind at the resort and Bailey went back to bed.

I watched some tv and read a book and looked over my photography course stuff. Also went down to the store and to the internet cafe for a little bit while Bailey was resting.

Doyle and Shayne went on the excursion. It was on the northside of Cancun at Isla Majueres. They went on a "party boat" (Shayne's terms) and had an absolute blast.

They also went and did some more snorkeling. They saw a really big barracuda, a couple stingrays and a bunch of really neat fish.

While it was cool, windy and at times raining at the resort, they said they had great weather.

I am really happy they went.

By dinnertime, Bailey was feeling good enough to go to the restaurant to eat. So it was a good day for all, I think.

Relaxing - Jan 11

We spent Sunday at the resort. I didn't even pull out the camera until evening. I did, however, read a couple of books while laying at the pool.

The dinner show at the Del Lago was the one that we had been waiting for. It was the "Ancient show". It was all ancient Mayan dance and costumes. Absolutely gorgeous. I took 124 pictures. I will not post them all but will post the nicer ones.
