Mare pen fencing is underway.

Because Hyde and Molson are being such good boys. We have put off starting the stallion runs until spring and are concentrating on getting the mare runs started.

We will have 4 large runs of 33 x 66 feet and 2 smaller 33 x 33 runs.

My men hard at work on the front side of the big pens (these pens will run lengthwise from north to south with the gates on the south side going into the yard).

Here is the far east and back line of fencing.

Here is the far west and back line of fencing.

Here is the front (east) side of the smaller pens (these pens will be square and there will be two of them with the gates opening to the east).

We will then separate it into the 6 runs...each run will have it's own water trough...big metal gate...and a plywood shelter in the back northwest corner.

Doyle is being very careful with this fence. Each post is measured from front to back - so that we get an even 8 feet between the center of each post...and they are all being measured for height as they are pounded and also leveled as they are pounded so that they aren't leaning.

DRAWS FOR 2ND GO HAVEN'T BEEN MADE YET BUT I DID FIND THIS WHICH MAKES ME HAPPY. LOL SO WE CAN LOOK FORWARD TO 2 GO ROUNDS THIS SHOW.

c) Go Round Advancement: Futurity divisions all horses will advance to the 2nd go round. Derby and Classic Challenge Open/Non-Pro divisions - top 80% of the entries will advance to the 2nd go round. The top 3 places in each division will receive go round money. Three head of fresh cattle per entry will be used in the go rounds and four head of fresh cattle per entry will be used in the finals.

THE SHOW STARTS ON WED...AND I AM HOPING TO GO DOWN FOR THE WHOLE THING...JUST A LITTLE WORRIED ABOUT FINDING SOMEWHERE TO STAY AND BE ABLE TO GET BACK AND FORTH FROM THE SHOW GROUNDS WITHOUT GETTING LOST. LOL

Sale struggles

I have 3 horses and the 3 remaining puppies online for sale. Why is it that people cannot read the ad in it's entirety or understand what all is written in the ad.

Sometimes you have to wonder if all they read is the title of the ad.

And when they ask questions, if they really listen to the answer.

Oct 10 - Anniversary and snow

Well, it is our 16th anniversary today. We are not doing anything special after all. We did spend last weekend in Red Deer so that is our anniversary stuff.

And what do you know, it is snowing. Surprise Surprise. LOL

Puppy and horse sales

Well, after stalling out for a bit...and monies not showing up...I re-did my puppy ad and have sold 3 more in the last week.

So counting the two from before...I have 5 gone and 3 to go (one girl and two boys left). Two even have names already - the white female's name is Nora and the biggest male's name is Smoky.

I have also listed Gidget, Molson and Dolly on some sale sites...and have a lady coming to look at Gidget and Molson next week, a gentleman who wants to look at Gidget and another lady asking for "all view" pics of all three horses.

So here's hoping

Gas prices

We are paying $1.10/litre for reg and $1.16/litre for deisel. And if i am doing my conversions correctly: $3.46/gallon for regular; $3.64/gallon for diesel - for my US friends.

Compare it to paying $1.46/litre for deisel in July when Hyde went to Saskatoon.

It is still way way up. I remember filling my small car 5 years ago for $25...when it finally crapped 2 years ago we were paying $48.

We topped up the truck on the way to Red Deer last weekend and it cost us $117. I think we were just under a half tank.

Advertising and promoting the boys

We spoke with one of the ladies that works at the Western Horse Review magazine about advertising for Hyde and Gunner. Man…it gets expensive. We will probably do a 6 month advertising blitz on Hyde this year…and add in Gunner next year when he is done showing as a 4 year old. I am waiting on an advertising package to see what the cost is going to end up being.

We also talked about nominating both Hyde and Gunner to the Supreme. We asked Jason about it and he said it can be a good thing. There are some parts of it that I still don’t quite understand but apparently there are special classes for offspring of CS nominated stallions and the top winning horse of the year gets a huge payout. So that is something else to think about.

This is the information I found on the website:

Membership fees are used to cover: advertising, operating costs, and added purses at the show. Stakes money, along with yearling nomination money, is placed in a term deposit to collect interest until the 2010 show when it is paid out as added money in the Canadian Supreme Futurity classes.
Stallion Membership Stakes Total
First Stallion $350.00 $450.00 $800.00

Shopping at the Supreme Trade Show

This is never a good thing for me as I always find stuff that I want. But this time, I actually went with a purpose. There were 3 things that I really wanted to find…one was stirrups for my cutting saddle. It came with oxbows and I am scared to use them. The second was a proper bit for Hyde. I figured with Jason there, he would be able to direct me to the right one. Third was a blanket for Gunner for shows.

Well, I did pretty good…got the stirrups and the bit…but not the blanket.

I also outfitted myself with 2 pairs of jeans, two western shirts and a western vest. Doyle got a new pair of boots.

We also spent some funds on the house – bought two rugs – one for under the kitchen table and one for the front door.

Oct - Supreme Horse Sale

Doyle and I hit the Western Horse Sale at theSupreme on Friday night with Jason and Chrissy. I wanted to see certain horses to see what they went for. Jason was just looking.

Apparently he found something he really liked as he bought a 2year old gelding. Canadian Supreme nominated. He is also related to Gunner in that his maternal Grandsire is High Brow Hickory. He will have to be careful when grabbing the horses for workouts as this little colt is almost identical to Gunner. He has a small snip and one white foot.

Oct 1 - puppies are growing

The puppies have moved outside. They can't quite get back up the ramp into the doghouse so have taken to sleeping underneath it. I can't see them all fitting under there in another few days...so Doyle is going to go out and rig something up for some traction.

They got their first taste of dogfood this morning - it was a FEEDING FRENZY. Absolutely hilarious.
